Featuring the Six (6) Traits + 1 Writing Process
Teachers, do you want to learn ways that makes it easy and fun for you to teach writing skills to your students? Do you want to learn about writing strategies that you can easily incorporate into your classroom? Do you want to have ideas for Right Now writing activities that result in higher levels of achievement?
Teachers who attend this Right Now ~ Spotlight On Writing Institute will gain knowledge, skills and ideas that they can easily incorporate into every day’s lessons. You will come away with simple ways to make writing a comfortable everyday activity that is fun. You will learn ways to help students see the connection with their lives and the words they write.
This Institute uses the Six (6) Traits + 1 Writing Process as a basis for teaching writing. The Six Traits + 1 Writing Process is a systematic approach for teaching writing skills to any age group, from K-4 students to adults. Following the 6 Traits + 1 Writing Process is very easy for teachers to do – even novice teachers. Most of all, teachers who teach writing using the Six Trait method find that they and their students look forward to writing because it is fun and brings results even to low-performing students.
The 6 Traits + 1 Writing Process involves looking at writing one trait at a time. Since writing is such a complicated activity, this approach helps teachers break down the task in a way that children can understand and use.
During the Right Now ~ Spotlight On Writing series, the presenter will assist teachers in gaining information about each of the6 Traits + 1 Writing Process, and provide opportunities to practice using rubrics. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in some of the sample activities and get advice and ideas from other teachers. In addition, teachers will be able to draft a plan for incorporating the 6 Traits + 1 Writing Process into their classroom schedule.
Teachers who have attended these institutes have students who read and write more often. These same teachers have reported higher achievement scores as a result of incorporating these strategies.
The Right Now ~ Spotlight On Writing Institute is presented by Catherine Washabaugh, M. S. Ms. Washabaugh has facilitated this program for many students and schools in the Milwaukee area. She is a former principal in MPS and private schools as well as an experienced teacher, presenter and writer who has used the 6 Traits + 1 Writing Process in her classroom and in her writing. Currently she coaches, consults and offers workshops for principals and teachers in the Milwaukee area.
